Abstract
Purpose: The materials for ophthalmic hydrogel lenses were polymerized by adding tungsten (VI) oxide nano particles to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, methyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate which are commonly used in ophthalmic contact lenses.
Methods: The changes in optophysical properties of the ophthalmic contact lens containing tungsten (VI) oxide nano particles were also measured to investigate the use of tungsten (VI) oxide as an additive of hydrogel contact lenses.
Results: the transmittance of UV was measured to be extremely low which shows that the nano particles can provide a UV-blocking property. Meanwhile, although the water content did not show a significant variation from the addition of tungsten (VI) oxide nano particles, water content slightly changed in combinations where tungsten nano particles were added at a constant ratio. The oxygen permeability showed to continuously decrease as the addition ratio of tungsten (VI) oxide nano particles increased even though there was no significant difference in water content.
Conclusions: Titanium(IV) isopropoxide and tungsten (VI) oxide nano particles are considered to satisfy the basic requirements of ophthalmic hydrogel contact lenses and can be used effectively as additives for functional ophthalmic hydrogel lenses.
